MELBOURNE, Australia - It's official - former world No.1 Justine Henin will make her Grand Slam return at the 2010 Australian Open. This week the former Australian Open champion has been granted one of four discretionary wildcards to the tournament at Melbourne Park in January.

"I spoke to Justine's team over the weekend and was happy to grant her request for a wildcard into the Australian Open," said Craig Tiley, Tournament Director of the Australian Open. "Justine is the ultimate competitor, and we are looking forward to welcoming her back. I know Justine will not have made the decision to come out of retirement lightly, and I have no doubt she will be in great shape and prepared to compete against the world's best. Watching Kim Clijsters' amazing win at the US Open was inspirational - who knows, perhaps the two will meet again at the Australian Open - I'd certainly look forward to that match."

The Australian Open offers eight wildcards into both the men's and women's events as follows: a reciprocal agreement with French Open, a reciprocal agreement with US Open, top Asian players, both male and female, and four Australian Open Play Off winners, which are allotted to Australian players only. A further four wildcards in both the men's and women's draw are allocated at the tournament's discretion.

Seven-time Grand Slam winner Henin, 27, announced a sudden retirement from professional tennis in May of 2008. After 15 months of firmly stating that she would not return to the sport, Henin made an announcement on September 22 about her intention to return to the game in 2010.

"A flame I thought was extinguished forever suddenly lit up again," Henin said when she announced her return.

Her official plans as of now include exhibition tournaments in Charleroi, Belgium on December 5, and a later exhibition in Dubai, to practice ahead of her return to the Tour in Australia.
